115 households displaced by floods receive relief food

At least 115 households who were displaced by floods in Makueni County have received relief food and non-food items from the government and Kenya Red Cross, Devolution Chief Officer (CO) Daniel Ndolo has said.

During the exercise, each household received 2 pieces of tarpaulins, 2 pieces of bar soap and additionally they were given mattresses, rice, salt, cooking oil, tissue papers, sanitary pads and other personal effects.

“I assure you of government support during these hard times,” said Ndolo who oversaw the distribution of the relief food and other items at Mutyambua camp on Wednesday that had 78 persons.

It was also revealed that a total of 68 houses have since collapsed in different parts of the county since the heavy rains started pounding the area including Ndulu Kilungu (20), Mbooni (25), Mukuyuni (10), Kithembe (10) and Matiliku (3) respectively.

Since the rains started there have been 23 deaths reported in the county, whereby two males are missing and a search is ongoing to recover the bodies.

The Chief Officer was accompanied by the Makueni County Red Cross Coordinator Evans Peter among other county and national government officials.

When contacted for comment, the county Executive for Devolution Japheth Mang’oka urged people to stop crossing flooded rivers, while saying the government was ready to assist whenever called to do so.
