Junior starlets goes past Samoa and book a space in the round of 16 at the women's worldcup.

NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya’s Junior Starlets have etched their names in the history books, securing a coveted spot in the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup round of 16 for the first time ever following a resounding 4–0 victory over Samoa at the Mohammed VI Football Complex on Sunday evening.

Drawn into a formidable "group of death" alongside football powerhouses China PR and the United States, Coach Mildred Cheche’s side demonstrated remarkable resilience to bounce back from a tough start in Group E.

After dropping their opening fixture 3–0 to China and suffering a 6–1 defeat against the USA—where Lindey Weey scored Kenya's lone goal—the Starlets delivered a masterclass in their final group match. The commanding victory over Samoa sealed third place in Group E, sending Kenya through to the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams.

Bakari Leads the Charge

The Junior Starlets took control from the opening whistle. Mwanakombo Bakari set the tone early, slotting home the opener in just the 5th minute. Brenda Awuor doubled the advantage in the 44th minute to give Kenya a comfortable lead before the break.

The Starlets maintained their relentless pressure in the second half. Gaudancia Maloba put the match beyond reach in the 61st minute, before Bakari struck again two minutes later to complete her brace and cap off a historic performance. Bakari’s brilliant display earned her the Player of the Match award.

With the group stage behind them, the Junior Starlets now prepare for their biggest test yet. Kenya will take on Japan in the round of 16 on Thursday, October 29, 2026.

The high-stakes clash will take place at Pitch 3 of the Mohammed VI Complex, with kickoff scheduled for 9:00 PM EAT.
