Homa Bay County Commissioner Moses Lilan has called for precautionary measures to curb adverse effects of heavy rains pounding the county.

He noted that the heavy rains could cause accidents and damage both on land and in the lake.

Speaking to the press Monday, Lilan said the Kenya Meteorological Department report indicated that there would be more rainfall between March and May this year and urged residents to put measures in place to curb adverse impact of the rains.

“The Kenya Meteorological department has given a weather forecast report that we will experience above normal rainfall. It is important for every one of us to be aware of the expected weather conditions and take precautionary measures,” Lilan said.

The administrator said some parts of Homa Bay County were prone to adverse effects of heavy rains.

“Our county experiences flash floods, destruction of farmland and destruction of property,” Lilan said while urging those who lived in areas prone to floods to move to higher groundsLilan said parts of sub-counties like Rachuonyo North, Rangwe, Ndhiwa and Suba were high risk areas.

“We are telling them to make plans of moving to higher grounds,” the administrator added.

Homa Bay County Beach Management Units Network Chairman Edward Oremo told fishermen to put measures in place to prevent accidents in Lake Victoria during the rains.

He said that the rains are usually accompanied by storms which capsized boats.

Oremo said there was need to put rescue boats in place and that the fishermen must avoid going to the Lake during bad weather.

“We have instructed all our beach management units’ chairmen in the county to put rescue boats in place. The fishermen should also avoid going to fish during bad weather conditions,” Oremo said.
