The body of a 16 years’ old boy who drowned at an open dam constructed by the Chinese through the LAPSET road project was retrieved this morning by divers and fishermen from the Kitere area of Tana River.

The youth who went to swim not knowing the depth of the Chinese Lapset road project dam drowned near the Waranweine area of Ijara Division Ijara Sub County.

The boy drowned yesterday afternoon and his body could not be found but was retrieved this morning by Pokomo fishermen and divers with a fishing net in the wee hours.

However, confirming the incident, Ijara acting police boss Mr Abdi Dumale said the fishermen had helped to retrieve the body using a fishing net.

He confirmed the deceased was buried immediately in strict adherence to Islamic rites after the body was retrieved.

However the residents led by Salah Yakub Yarrow called on Chinese contractors who are building the Lapset road project to ensure that the dams they constructed are fenced off to check incidents of drowning.
