Kenya Power has announced a planned interruption of its prepaid system. The company in a statement on Monday, May 27, 2024, said the interruption will allow them to upgrade the system for improved service delivery.
According to the statement, the interruption is scheduled for 24 hours from Sunday night to Monday night.
At the time of the system upgrade, Kenya Power customers will not be able to purchase electricity tokens from all the venting points.
“We wish to inform our customers that the prepaid token venting system will be unavailable from 10.00 pm Sunday, 2nd June to 10.00 pm Monday, 3rd June to enable us to upgrade our systems for improved services,’ read part of the statement.
“During this period, customers will not be able to buy electricity tokens from all vending points including Kenya Power offices, M-PESA pay bill number 888880, Airtel Money and banking channels,” the company added.
Kenya Power is now asking its customers to buy enough tokens before the planned system upgrade to avoid any inconveniences.
“We appreciate your understanding and cooperation,” the company said.
The Kenya Power token services have been facing periodical technical challenges which the company hopes to address with the upcoming upgrade.
The service allows a customer on prepaid services to purchase tokens via M-PESA, Airtel Money or banks from the comfort of their houses.
Kenya Power is a state-owned company that transmits, distributes and retails electricity to over eight million customers throughout Kenya, a majority of who purchase tokens.
Data from the company indicate that while 2.1 million Kenya Power customers are connected through postpaid, 6.8 million are on prepaid.
