Cleo Malalah Super Cup Football Tournament expanded, to cover five counties

The annual Cleo Super Cup football tournament is back – better and bigger.

Sponsored by former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, the tournament has been involving football teams from across all constituencies in the county.

While announcing a return of the tournament, Malala has said going forward, it will be covering five Western Kenya counties.

“Using talents to unite the Mulembe house is the vision of the tournament,” said the Senator whose Kakamega gubernatorial bid in the just concluded general election failed.

Malala had vied for the seat on Amani National Congress (ANC) ticket, with the backing of the Kenya Kwanza coalition.

He however lost to Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) candidate Fernandez Barasa.

But despite the loss, there have been expectations that he would soon land a government job.

It is against this backdrop that Malala might have opted to expand the tournament to cover the whole Western counties.

Posts shared on the legislators’ official Twitter handle indicate that winners of the Cleo Malalah Super Cup Football Tournament will be going home with Ksh3 million.

“The Cleo Malalah Super Cup Football Tournament is Back. Covers the five houses of Mulembe Nation; Kakamega, Vihiga, Busia, Bungoma and Trans Nzoia counties with a cash prize of: 3 Million for the winner. 1.5 Million, Runner up 1 Million for 2nd runners up 500,000 shillings for the 3rd runners up,” Malala announced on January 16, 2023.

The tournament has been one of the biggest in Kakamega County for the last few years.

Finals have usually been staged at the iconic Bukhungu stadium, rekindling what political pundits compared to the historic Nabongo political rallies.

A final for the 2021 edition was held at the Mumias Sports Complex, which President William Ruto, then the deputy President and presidential candidate attended.

Ruto’s appearance ignited talk of the ANC party leader warming up to support his presidential bid.

On the same day of the tournament, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga graced the Azimio la Umoja political event held at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega with conveners of the two events (Cleo Malala Super Cup and Azimio la Umoja) stating that they were meant to unite Kenyans.
