The Government through the Department for Social Protection and Senior Citizens Affairs has embarked on a 21-days data collection exercise in Bungoma County that will culminate into an Enhanced Single Registry (ESR) entity.

Bungoma County Co-coordinator for Social Development Mr. Eliud Ondara told KNA that the data collection exercise was targeting to register vulnerable members of the society, after a listing exercise that was done one week ago.

He said that in Bungoma, 130,894 households had been listed for the exercise and appealed to residents of the area to co-operate with enumerators who would visit their homes by giving them the information required in the questionnaire.

Ondara said that the data being collected is important as it would enable the government to plan for the poor and vulnerable in the community by putting in place strategies that would uplift the lives of the vulnerable and marginalized groups.

He said that the exercise was also targeting to collect correct and adequate data on the elderly and People Living with Disability and it would enable the government to plan for these groups.

The ESR aims at storing information of vulnerable households with the aim of establishing a database that would contain data for potential beneficiaries and those existing for social protection.

The ESR will also ensure timely response and interventions that will cover a bigger number of the vulnerable households during emergencies and shocks.

Ondara who was speaking to KNA in his office on Wednesday said that the data would facilitate linkages to more services for greater social and economic inclusion for the vulnerable in the community.

He said that the exercise was taking place in all the 13 Sub-Counties in Bungoma including Mt. Elgon Forest.

Some 866 Enumerators and 87 Supervisors have been recruited to carry out the exercise.
