Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has condemned the brutal killing of a Maseno University student who was fatally shot during Azimio demonstrations on Monday.
The governor has demanded speedy prosecution of the killer officer to serve justice to the deceased family.
“As we send condolence messages to the family of the slain student and the Maseno University fraternity, we demand that the police officer who fired the killer bullet be arrested and prosecuted as soon as possible,” stated Prof Nyong’o in a statement.
William Mayange, a third-year English Literature student was hit on the neck and was pronounced dead upon arriving at Coptic Hospital.
Prof Nyong’o decried that the cold-blood murder of the student had no legal bearing since the students were engaging in a peaceful demonstration over the high cost of living.
“A trigger-happy police officer yesterday shot and killed a third-year literature student at Maseno University, without any lawful cause,” he stated.
He said it is illegal for law enforcers to use maximum brutality on unarmed protestors.
“It is unfortunate that instead of using tear gas or rubber bullets, the police chose to fire live ammunition at the students,” Nyong’o said.
Further, he called on the police to exhibit professionalism and restraint while quelling future riots.
According to a police occurrence report, the students during the protests invaded Sairam supermarket, in Maseno town and other business premises along Kisumu-Busia road.
The rowdy students also lit bonfires and barricaded stones along the road crippling motorists’ movement along the busy highway.
The police added the protesters invaded Maseno police station
“They overpowered the officers who were manning the station as they had run out of teargas canisters and blanks. Six police officers were injured during the skirmishes. This prompted the officers who had been sent out to quell the intruders to fire live bullets,” read the police statement.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have taken up the matter.
