Governor Wanga issues 15-day tax holiday

By Peter Ochieng

Traders in Homabay County will not pay taxes for the next 15 days, after getting a ‘tax holiday’ from Governor Gladys Wanga’s administration.

The intention of the holiday, according to the first-term governor, is to identify gaps leading to reduced revenue collection in Lakeside County.

“After my inauguration, I sought an update from relevant offices on the financial health of the county,” said Wanga as quoted by Business Daily.

“We have seen a fluctuation that points to a breach in the system of revenue collection. There is no point in people paying money that does not reach the county,” she added.

Over the 15 days, revenue collection officers will report to the department of finance and economic planning for further direction.

The waiver period started on Wednesday, September 14, 2022.

A 13-member multi-agency task force was formed to come up with ways of raising collections in the County.

Wanga was elected on August 09, 2022, on the ODM Party ticket, taking over as Homabay County’s second governor.

She took over from Cyprian Awiti who served for two terms, from 2013 to 2022.

Her work is clearly cut out, with Awiti’s administration having been regularly ranked among the worst in terms of development initiatives across the Country.
