Homa Bay Town Constituency Member of Parliament has condemned the Supreme Court’s decision that allowed the registration of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) community.
This is after the government appealed to the court to bar the registration of the National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (NGLHRC) as a Non-Governmental Organization.
However, in its ruling, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the lobby group stating that it was unconstitutional to deny them registration on the basis of the applicants’ sexual orientation.
Speaking to the press, Peter Opondo Kaluma claimed the ruling on 24th February 2023 violated Kenyan law and culture adding the issue has been a subjected to a lot of debates.
He chastised the Supreme Court for relying on Yogyakarta principles in Indonesia that documented against human rights in the areas of sexual orientation and gender identity.
Kaluma thanked the faithful in Kenya for coming out strongly against the whole decision adding that he had a dialogue with the leadership of the Hindu and the Islamic community and all churches who condemned this matter.
“We must ask ourselves if there is any practicality of allowing homosexuality or same-sex marriage and how this will impact our future as human beings,” he said.
