At least 68 elderly persons in Ukiah Ward in Makueni County have received food and non-food items.

The food items distributed by the Department of Gender, Children, Youth and Sports included maize flour, rice and cooking oil to cushion them from social and economic hardship.

Persons with severe disabilities also received wheel chairs, blankets and beds at Ukia market on Tuesday.

Anita Mbinya Mutula, the spouse of Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr officiated the event. Earlier in the day, she flagged off the consignment from the governor’s office in Wote Town.

The Department’s County Executive Committee Member (ECM) Eng. Peter Mumo said the social protection programme was geared towards ensuring a dignified life for the vulnerable groups.

Makueni has a population of 36,369 PWDs, 66,691 elderly persons, and over 65,000 OVC whereby only 23,716 were under cash transfer.
