Man dies of suspected anthrax infection in Embu

One person has died of suspected case of Anthrax in Gatumbi Village in Runyenjes Sub- County, Embu, while 365 others were screened and treated.

 

The 73-year-old Patrick Ndwigwa died on Sunday, March 19 at Embu Level Five Hospital where he was being admitted after consuming meat suspected to be contaminated on Monday, March 13.

 

According to a report released to the press by the office of Governor Cecily Mbarire on Tuesday, the victim had on material date gone in the neighbourhood home of Henry Gichango to assist slaughter a cow.

 

On March 16, the victim started vomiting, having difficulty in breathing, tremors and lesions on both hands and was rushed to Runyenjes Level Four Hospital where he was given first aid before being referred to Embu Level Five Hospital where he died in the following day.

 

The administration is also in the process of carrying out a mop-up exercise of all those who may have come into contact or consumed the contaminated meat.

 

The report further notes that three dogs and two cats have also been affected and are under the surveillance of veterinary officers

 

Following this development, the devolved unit has organized a public Baraza on Wednesday, March 22, to create awareness on the contagious disease.
