Messy day at Azimio rally in Kiambu

By McCreadie Andias,

Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition faced a rather messy and unexpected fiasco in their mass action rallies in Kiambu County yesterday after police fired teargas.

At the same time, goons sabotaged the rally preparations in Githurai.

Azimio leader Raila Odinga was addressing a roadside rally in Kiambu when a teargas canister was lobbed into the masses causing a fiasco.

The cause of the disorder at the rally was not established amid claims that there were plots to disrupt Raila’s caravan in the region.

Despite the disorder, Odinga and his aides continued with the rally with Odinga strongly condemning the incident maintaining that his team will remain strong despite attempts to stop them.

”Tell that officer that we will proceed with our match despite the intimidation attempt,” said Raila.

”They have fired teargas at us at Kiambu town but the citizens have stood firm with us as Azimio. Thank you,” Raila added.

Meanwhile, preparations for the Azimio rally planned in Githurai were shortly disrupted after a rowdy youth stormed into the venue and vandalized the main dias.

This happened just before the Azimio caravan entered the planned venue.

Earlier in the day a group of people claiming to be businessmen and residents of Githurai had staged protests against the planned rally, the group held banners with anti-mass action messages and marched around the Githurai underpass.

These developments come only two days before Azimio’s planned mass action in the country’s capital with Mr. Odinga inviting his supporters across the country to join the march to the state house insisting that the faction will be held peacefully.
