Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU), a nongovernmental organisation that deals with human rights, governance and health has taken the initiative in engaging women, youths and religious leaders in the peace-making process in the country.

The initiative dubbed the Amani Haki Project advocates for a free society where women, the disabled and the less privileged individuals in society are respected.

Amos Matiro, a representative from IMLU who spoke during a peace forum held in Migori Town said that the initiative aims to quip the society with skills and knowledge to enhance peace among the existing communities in the country.

Matiko said that the organisation in association with other peace and cohesion agencies has been helping people get justice, building trust and partnership through community policing to solving disputes amicably without violence.

The organisation has since helped women who have been subjected to Gender-Based Violence access treatment and justice.

The official called upon the opinion leaders and political figures in the county to refrain from utterances that could jeopardise peace and security to enhance unity, cohesion and harmony among all the communities in the region.

IMLU has also been advocating for the electoral process and according to Matiko, peace and unity can only be achieved if the political injustices can be fully addressed.

Vice Chairperson, Migori Civil Society Organisations Titus Orwa said that Migori had been experiencing political intolerance during general elections, the recent events being the political demonstrations that were called by the opposition late last year.

Orwa urged the NGOs in the county to focus more on political unity and peace championing messages to enlighten the public on the importance of peace, love and unity in the region.
