President William Samoei Ruto and National Assembly Speaker Moses Masika Wetang’ula are expected to make the final decision on the Kenya Kwanza Alliance candidate, for the upcoming Bungoma County Senatorial by-election.

Residents of Bungoma County will go to the polls on December 08, 2022, to elect Wetang’ula’s successor, after he resigned in September to contest for the post of Speaker of the National Assembly.

Wetang’ula, known as Papa wa Roma in Bungoma had served as the Senator from 2013.

The vacant position has attracted among others, Ford Kenya Party’s John Wafula Wakoli and United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party Mwambu Mabonga.

UDA led by President William Ruto and Ford Kenya led by Wetang’ula are members of the Kenya Kwanza Alliance.

Speaking in Mt. Elgon, Bungoma County over the weekend, Wetang’ula said he will hold talks with the President, with a view of coming up with a single Kenya Kwanza candidate.

“We will not fail to give you a single Kenya Kwanza candidate,” said the Speaker.

Bungoma County Deputy Governor Jenipher Mbatiany urged the Kenya Kwanza Alliance top brass to settle on a single candidate, to ensure the political formation retains the seat previously held by Wetang’ula.

“Ford Kenya and UDA is one house; we are a family. During campaigns ahead of the August 09, 2022 polls, we worked as a family. And the bible says that a house that is divided will never stand,” she said.

“If UDA and Ford Kenya start divisions, our Kenya Kwanza house will not stand. I request you Papa wa Roma to go and speak to the President so that you give us a single candidate. If we don’t unite, our competitors may win,” she added.

The seat has also attracted a formidable candidate in the frame of former Kanduyi MP Wafula Wamunyinyi.

The DAP-Kenya Party leader declared his bid for the seat over the weekend, under the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya formation.

MPs elected on the UDA Party ticket in Bungoma want Ford Kenya leaders to support a UDA candidate after they supported Wetang’ula’s Speakership bid.
