The Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers in Homa Bay have issued a strike notice after the county government reportedly failed to address their grievances.

Their union Secretary Benard Ouma raised concerns over disparities between the salaries they were paid and what they signed for in their appointment letters.

“We handle young learners who need special and proper attention, but the teachers themselves cannot focus on the kids because they are demoralized. “He said.

The unionist also said that they were forced to sign the wealth declaration forms indicating that they were permanent pensionable terms yet their pay slips indicated the contrary.

Ouma said that come next week Monday 18th, they will down their tools.

“Parents should not bother taking their children to school as the teachers will have downed their tools.” He said Fanuel Kwedha, a teacher in Homa Bay urged the government to reinstate the Ksh. 10,000 deductions on their salary which was done following a directive from the Salaries and Remuneration Commission.

He also appealed to Homa Bay Members of the County Assembly to join them in fighting for their rights.

A teacher Millicent Abongo said that some of them had taken loans only for their pay to be reduced. She also pleaded with Governor Gladys Wanga to intervene in their plight.
