Uhuru responds to Ruto over tax evasion claims

By Peter Ochieng

Former President Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta has responded to claims of sponsoring Azimio La Umoja One Kenya public consultation forums, raised by President William Ruto and his allies.

Speaking in Narok County over the weekend, the President said that Azimio public forums spearheaded by Raila Odinga are being sponsored by the former President’s allies, who are not keen on paying taxes.

A section of Ruto’s allies went point blank, naming Kenyatta as the one person behind the rallies in a bid to evade ‘giving czar what belongs to him.’

Speaking on Tuesday when he visited the family of former Cabinet Secretary (CS) for education, late George Magoha in Lavington Nairobi, Kenyatta said his name was being dragged through the mud by people he said promised a lot but deliver nothing.

“These people are making a lot of noise, let them make noise. You know it is common for somebody who does not have what to do to make noise. Let them make noise that is how the world is. We are going on with our issues,” said Kenyatta.

The former Head of State was accompanied by among others, former first lady Margret Gakuo Kenyatta, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and a host of Cabinet Secretaries who served with the late Magoha, under him.

Uhuru Kenyatta appointed Magoha CS for education in 2019, a position he held until President Ruto replaced him with Ezekiel Machogu, towards the end of 2022.

Kenyatta said, unlike some people, Magoha was a workaholic who was less talk and much work.

“There are people who talk a lot about what they will do and do nothing, and those are many. But there are people who will talk very little but do a lot. Magoha belonged to that class of people who were doers.”

Musyoka said it was wrong for Ruto to attack his predecessor, especially at this moment in time when the country is mourning the late Magoha, who always wanted a peaceful and united country.

Magoha died last week after suffering from cardiac arrest. He will be laid to rest on 11th February 2023 in Gem, Siaya County.
