Wanyama Announces Retirement From International Football

Harambee Stars Captain Victor Wanyama has hang his international boots.

In a statement released on Monday, September 27, 2021, the Montreal Impact skipper expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent his country for 14 years, noting that time had come for a younger team to take the reigns.

The Kenyan international noted the support he has received over the years, assuring to always support the national team, and its representatives.

“It has been an honor to represent my Country and I think the time has come for me to pass the mantle to the young ones, I’ll always be part of the National Team and their biggest supporter,” Wanyama said.

“We have shared great moments together and I am proud to have been your captain and leader. But all good things must come to an end eventually and after long consideration, I have made the really difficult decision to retire from international football,” he added.

Wanyama reminisced on his incredible career that begun with a debut against Nigeria to captaining the team in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

He expressed his desire to at one time be part of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and to grow the sport to greater heights.

Kenyans have since joined in to wish Wanyama all the best as he plays club football for Canadian Major League Soccer (MLS) side, Montreal Impact.

“Thanks for the memories. We truly appreciate the leadership and the precedence you’ve set,” moniker Jakanairo stated.

“All the best in your future endeavours bro. Thank you for your service,” Maina Wambui tweeted.

“Thank you Big Vic. You’ve been of exemplary service even in adversity. It is sad it has come to this. I hope one day the truth behind this will be told. All the best Lion of Muthurwa. The door will always be open for your return when things are right,” Mutwiri Mutuota added.
