A family in Kokwongoi, village Lelan Ward Marakwet West sub-county is counting huge losses following a landslide that caused extensive damage to their one-and-a-half-acre farm under various crops.
The farm owner, John Chelal said they had invested a lot of money in terms of farm inputs such as fertilizers and seeds as well as preparing the land only for the landslide to wash away the crops and soil.
“This is a shocking incident. We have lost a significant amount of money because our farm was already planted with crops,” regretted Chelal.
He particularly lamented that prior to planting there was an acute shortage of fertilizers that he alleged were being sold expensively.
“It was very difficult to access fertilizers, and now everything we planted has been washed away into the river,” he stressed.
Contacted for comment the agricultural officer in charge of Lelan Ward Paul Kanda advised residents to plant trees to prevent further erosion and landslides.
African Inland Church (AIC) Bishop, Dr. David Kipsoi speaking to KNA attributed the landslide to human activities and urged residents to conserve the environment.
