All schools in Homa Bay County including those which hosted flood victims have reopened for the second term despite the flood challenges, County Education Director Eunice Khaemba has confirmed.

The two schools which hosted flood victims in Rachuonyo North Sub County are Osodo and Kobuya Primary Schools.

Homa Bay County Commissioner Moses Lilan had directed that alternative campsites for flood victims be sought to leave room for the learners.

Kobuya Location Chief Damianus Osano said some families who were camping at Kobuya Primary school managed to go to nearby churches.

At Osodo Primary School, Head teacher Walter Owino lamented that the school pit latrines have been filled up with flood waters.

“We will have to drain them to make them safe,” he said.

Ms. Khaemba however said at least 50 learners at Sikri Jerusalem Primary school in Lambwe Ward, Mbita Sub-county would have to use boats to access school because of lake backflow. Previously, students would wade in water as they went to school.

She said there was need for extreme caution as hippos live in the same area they use as they go to school.

Ms. Khaemba urged parents to closely watch over their children and assist them to access their schools safely.

“In case a boat will not be available, the learners will be taken to other schools on the mainland,” the Director said.
