Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has claimed that the government is yet to pay floods victims Ksh10,000 that they were promised.
The ODM legislator further noted that the amount that the victims had been promised was too small.
Addressing some of the victims in Nairobi, the vocal legislator claimed it was inhuman form the government not to honour its promise.
“What is Ksh10,000 to someone who lost his house, clothings and other items?” Babu Owino asked.
“Even if he/she was living in a mabati how, that amount is too small to sustain them. But when that small amount of money the government has not yet paid them,” he added.
President William Ruto has said his administration would support families affected by floods in Nairobi with Ksh10,000 each.
However, the amount was criticized by some opposition leaders.
The President made the promise when visiting over 40,000 families that had been rendered homeless by the raging floods.
“For families that have lost everything, such allocations are too little to start afresh. We demand that the government increase the allocation to at least Ksh100,000 per family and immediately launch an emergency aid appeal for all the flood victims in Kenya,” said opposition leader Raila Odinga.
The country has for the last few months witnessed floods that affected over half of the 47 counties.
Latest data from the government indicate that other 220 people have died so far.Hundreds of thousands others have been left homeless with property worth billions of shillings also being destroyed.
