Chavakali Boys High School community is in mourning, following the death of a student on Monday night, in Kisumu county.
The student died as over 30 others were injured, after an Easy Coach bus they had boarded hit the rail guard and fell down near the Mamboleo junction.
They were reportedly heading home after schools closed for the April holiday.
A report from Kondele Police Station indicates that the driver of the bus was not found at the scene.
“It happened that the vehicle was negotiating the said Coptic round about on its way Kisumu general direction from Kakamega when the driver lost control hit a rail guard and the vehicle fell down at the edge of the road and rested on its left side,” reads the report in part.
Two students are undergoing treatment at Avenue hospital, while 32 others are being treated at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Refferal Hospital (JOOTRH).
Meanwhile, at least 10 passengers were killed and 11 others were injured in an accident involving two passenger vehicles and a lorry at Salama area, along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway. The accident involved two matatus, and a lorry.
Four passengers died on the spot while others succumbed to the injuries in hospital, according to a police report.
The accidents are being reported in the wake of an ongoing campaign to address the rising cases of accidents in the country.
The campaign which involves nabbing unroadworthy vehicles is being conducted by police in collaboration with officials from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
NTSA figures show that more than 1, 000 people have lost their lives in road accidents since January this year.
