Clash Leaves Scores Injured in Murang’a as Police Confront Youths

About five police officers and 10 residents of the Makenji area in Kandara subcounty, Murang’a county, have sustained injuries following confrontations that temporarily blocked Thika Kenol highway.

Chaos erupted in Murang’a yesterday as police forces engaged with local youths during a heated protest.

The unrest began In the early afternoon when a group of young demonstrators took to the streets, voicing their frustrations over recent socio-economic issues and alleged police brutality.

Eyewitnesses reported that the situation escalated rapidly. “The police were using tear gas and batons to disperse the crowd, but the youths responded by throwing stones and setting up barricades,” said Mary Wanjiku, a local shopkeeper.

“It was chaotic, and many people got hurt.”

Medical officials at Murang’a County Hospital confirmed that dozens of individuals were treated for injuries, ranging from minor abrasions to more severe wounds.

“We’ve seen a significant number of patients come in with injuries related to the clashes,” stated Dr. James Njoroge, the hospital’s chief medical officer. “Our team is working around the clock to provide the necessary care.”he added.

Local authorities have defended the police actions, stating that the force was necessary to maintain order and protect property.

“The youths were engaging in unlawful activities, and the police had to intervene to prevent further damage,” said Murang’a County Police Commander Peter Muthui.

“We are committed to restoring peace and ensuring the safety of all residents.”Muthui added.

Community leaders, have called for an independent investigation into the incident, alleging excessive use of force by the police.

“The level of violence used against these young people was unacceptable,” said Josephine Mwangi, a local activist. “We need a thorough investigation to hold those responsible accountable and to address the underlying issues that led to this unrest.” Mwangi added.

Murang’a has seen a rise in public demonstrations in recent months, driven by economic hardships and a perceived lack of government response to local grievances.

Youth unemployment and allegations of corruption within the local administration have fueled the discontent.

The clash Is the latest in a series of confrontations between law enforcement and civilians across Kenya, raising concerns about the state of civil rights and law enforcement practices in the country.

Human rights organizations have repeatedly called for reforms to address these issues.

As the Chao’s settles in Murang’a, the community remains on edge, with many calling for dialogue and resolution.

The incident underscores the urgent need for addressing socio-economic disparities and fostering trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve.

The government’s response in the coming days will be crucial in determining whether peace can be restored and sustained.
