In a sustained effort to combat the menace of Muguka abuse within the coast region, the County Government of Mombasa has joined Kilifi County in announcing a 10-day transformative activism campaign across the region.

Speaking at the Governor’s office, Mombasa Deputy Governor, Francis Thoya, said over the next ten days, they will embark on a nationwide campaign to combat the detrimental effect of Muguka consumption particularly among the youth.

“This movement will bring together communities, leaders and various stakeholders and health officials to address the social economic and health challenges posed by Muguka addiction,” stated Thoya.

The primary goal of the national movement is to galvanize support for the proposed draft Crops (Amendment) Bill, 2024 introduced by the Kilifi North MP Owen Baya to remove Miraa/Muguka as a scheduled crop.

“Despite the apparent hesitation by the National Government to treat this matter with the seriousness it deserves, we will continue to mobilize our community to combat the use of Muguka and support the draft amendment bill 2024, aimed at removing Muguka as a crop,” said Thoya.

The campaign also aims to raise awareness, mobilise the community and advocate for policy changes to eradicate the menace of Muguka consumption from society.

Furthermore, the Deputy Governor noted that the County Government of Mombasa remains unwavering in its resolve to protect the welfare of its citizens by creating a safe and drug-free environment for future generations.

The move comes after the Embu High Court lifted a ban on Muguka imposed by Mombasa, Taita-Taveta and Kilifi counties, pending the hearing and determination of a petition filed by Muguka traders.
