Embu County has seen a surge in cases of tuberculosis (TB) that Governor Cecily Mbarire attributes to poor hygiene in social joints.Ms Mbarire said some bars are unable to properly clean their drinking vessels, leading to the TB bacteria being transmitted from one customer to the next.
She said bars that lack facilities to clean glasses and mugs with warm water and soap should consider using disposable cups.
She was addressing the media after a meeting of her government and the County Security Committee called to review the current campaign against illicit brews.
She divulged that 1916 applicants for liquor licenses have been denied for various reasons, including being near schools.
Of the 1180 who got licenses, 519 are in Manyatta, 151 in Runyenjes, 171 in Mbeere North and 339 in Mbeere South. She said a multiagency inspection team has been formed to be inspecting the alcohol outlets quarterly to ensure compliance with license conditions and hygiene.
She also disclosed that they were stepping up the war against bhang and called on residents to provide information about those who distribute the substance to the relevant authorities.
