Fatuma Ahmed officially assumes her role as Kenya Air Force Commander

The Kenya Air Force (KAF) on Thursday, May 9, 2024, witnessed a historic moment as Major General Fatuma Ahmed assumed her role as the unit’s head.

Maj Gen Ahmed recently became the first female Service Commander in the history of the Kenya Defence Forces following promotions announced by President William Ruto.

The new service commander was handed instruments of power in a colorful Change of Guard ceremony which was held at the Kenya Air Force headquarters in Nairobi.

During the ceremony, Lieutenant General John Omenda passed the baton as he moved into his new position as Vice Chief of Defence Forces (VCDF).

In his address, Lt Gen Omenda lauded Maj Gen Ahmed’s appointment and emphasized the importance of supporting her leadership for mission success.

He also underscored the collaborative effort required from all service personnel to fulfil the Kenya Air Force’s mandate.

Expressing gratitude to the service personnel for their unwavering commitment, Lt Gen Omenda further urged them to maintain professionalism and integrity in all endeavors.

“I urge you to cooperate with all those you interact with both at work and while conducting your personal activities. Wave the flag of the Kenya Air Force high while upholding its great name,” he said.

Meanwhiie, Major General Paul Otieno, the newly appointed Commander Kenya Navy, also officially took over the mantle from Major General Thomas Ng’ang’a.

The hand over ceremony was held at the Kenya Navy Headquarters.

In his speech during the ceremony, Major General Otieno advised the Kenya Navy personnel to be committed to their duties of safeguarding Kenya’s maritime domain.

“Kenya Navy has been steadfast in safeguarding Kenya’s Maritime interests. Be committed to your duties and observe Kenya Defence Forces core values while executing the Kenya Navy mandate,” he said.

He also urged Kenya Navy service personnel to embrace teamwork, professionalism and integrity while performing duties onboard Kenya Navy ships.

Major General Ng’ang’a was moved to be the Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration and Finance at the National Defence University, Kenya.
