Flood-related death toll rises as 9 more lives are lost in last 24 hrs

Nine more lives have been lost due to the ongoing flood situation, the government has announced.

In a update by the government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, the nine died in various parts of the country in the last 24 hours. This brings to 228, the number of deaths linked to the floods.

“We mourn the loss of 9 lives in the past 24 hours, including 7 adults and 2 children bringing the total flood-related toll to 228, across the country,” Mwaura said in part of the statement issued on Sunday.

Another 164 Kenyans have been injured due to the floods while 72 others are currently reported missing.

In addition, approximately 212,630 persons from 42,526 households have been displaced.

“The total number of persons affected across the country stands at 223,198,” the government spokesperson said.

In the Mai Mahiu tragic incident, 52 persons have been confirmed dead, so far, while 52 others were injured. To date, 51 persons are still reported as missing.

“The search and rescue/retrieval operation is still underway,” Mwaura said.

He noted that 151 Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and 400 National Youth Service (NYS) officers have been deployed to help in the search and rescue efforts.

Which counties are worst hit by floods?

The government also revealed that Homa Bay, Kajiado,Nakuru, Nairobi and Mandera are the worst hit counties.

The five counties, the government spokesperson said, have suffered extensive floodings and significant disruption to daily life and economic activities.

Meanwhile, the government continues to effect the 24-hour evacuation notice issued on May 2, 2024, to residents living near high-risk dams and reservoirs.

“The government is facilitating logistical support, providing alternative accomodation and essential supplies to those affected,” Mwaura said.

In Nairobi, a multi-agency team is leading the evacuation of people residing in riparian areas.

The government says for far, 163, 210 residents have been evacuated either forcefully or voluntarily.

“The government has arranged alternative accomodation for those affected and they will be considered for social housing on a priority basis,” said the government spokesperson.
