Former Kenyatta hospital employee found guilty of stealing drugs

A former Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) employee has been found guilty of stealing medical drugs from the national health facility, worth over Sh15,000.


The court was told that Magdaline Wambui while at the Kenyatta National Hospital in Upper Hill within Nairobi County, on December 02, 2021, stole seven packets of Nepilet Nebivolon 5mg drugs, two packets of Atacand Candesartan 8mg drugs, 2 packets of AIRTAL 100mg drugs, two packets of Sildenafil 25g and one packet of Lamontrigine Lamictal 100mg, all valued at Sh15,156 the property of the hospital.


Milimani Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi in her ruling said that evidence presented in court by the prosecution through Nekira Kibera and Naomi Wanjiru, proved that the medical supplies came into the possession of the accused person by virtue of her employment.


The court further heard that the accused was found carrying the drugs by security officers, while leaving the hospital.


“The accused had been charged with two counts of stealing by servant contrary to section 281 of the penal code and handling stolen property contrary to section 322(1) as read with section 322(2) of the penal code,” said the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) in a statement.


She will be sentenced on May 28, 2024.


Meanwhile, a man was arraigned before Milimani Law Courts to face seven charges of forgery involving allegations of falsifying important documents, contrary to section 345 as read with section 349 of the penal code.


Joseph Kamande, with reported intent to defraud allegedly forged a Kenyan identity Card under the Identification number 2364524 and the name John Muthee Kaunga.

He is also alleged to have forged other documents namely a Diamond Trust Bank account statement, and securities account opening/maintenance form duly filled by him.


The accused pleaded not guilty to all the counts before Senior Principal Magistrate Robinson Ondieki, and was released on a cash bail of Sh100,000.


The case will be mentioned on June 6, 2024.
