The Government has declared Friday, May 10, 2024, a public holiday to start tree planting programme for climate change mitigation.
The day will also be set to honour those killed by floods that have swept different parts of the country claiming about 180 lives.
Earlier Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura wrote on his X account that “A gazette notice shall be issued to this effect. Hon Soipan Tuya, Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Forestry & Climate Change shall hold a press conference today to give further directions.”
Kenyans are encouraged to plant more trees and contribute to the nation’s environmental sustainability efforts with the impacts of climate change adversely affecting the region.
President William Ruto has been on the forefront to advocate for climatic sustainability efforts geared by planting of trees where his administration has made an environmental commitment to plant 15 billion trees by 2030 that will help to combat climate crisis.
The Friday event will be led by Government Administratives while the government is expected to provide trees seedlings for Kenyans who will engage in the activity.
