Homa bay county governor Gladys Wanga has distributed 7.5 tons of BT cotton seeds to farmers in an exercise meant to increase cotton production and create employment.

The seed distribution took place during launch of “Pamba Mwandu” programme in Kochia primary school, Tuesday.

“Pamba mwandu” Meaning ‘cotton is wealth’ governor Wanga said is a programme geared towards the revival of cotton farming and production in the County.

“Today, we are launching the first phase of this plan. We are targeting to give 10MT of seeds enough for 6,666 acres to over 4,030 farmers” Ms Wanga said.

She said the county has spent over Sh27 million to avail the 7.5 tons of BT cotton seeds adding that they have also been privileged to receive 990Kgs from Rivatex and 1.6MT from AFA.

The governor said as government they are reviving their heritage of cotton farming, from farm to fashion, and termed cotton a significant cash crop with a long history in Kenya saying residents of Homa Bay County also have a long history with cotton, especially from the late 70s to early 90s.

However, she said production declined due to various factors that include inadequate government support, low yields, and competition from synthetic fibres among others.

“Am delighted to announce that my administration has renewed its focus on the cotton industry, recognising its potential to contribute to economic growth and rural development,” Governor Wanga said.

The Governor said Pamba Mwandu project aims to revitalise cotton production and processing in Homa Bay County saying the current land under cotton production is 7,000 acres which as government aim to increase to 19,600 acres this year.

She rallied women and youth to actively engage in cotton production as a source of income generation and increased opportunities.

“Pambo Mwandu is a project that will create direct and indirect employment opportunities for local communities, will increase income from cotton farming and consequently, contribute to improved living standards for farmers and their families,” the governor said.

She said they have laid down meticulous plans key among them is the distribution of BT Cotton seeds to farmers and the improvement of agricultural extension services which she said will boost cotton production per acre from the current 700Kgs to approximately 1500 Kgs.

“It is significant also to note that we have invested up to Sh70 million in 6 tractors and implements for production farm mechanization, 150 tones capacity of seed cotton storage facility and farmers’ manned cotton production network of 14 registered cotton growers’ co-operative societies across the county with over 8,000 memberships,” the governor said.

According to the governor Pamba Mwandu will see over 35,000 households benefit within the cotton value chain in the County hence mitigating poverty through job creation.

Cotton is grown mainly for its lint in the fibre subsector. In addition, the by-products are used to make cottonseed oil, animal feeds, and cottonseed cakes.
