The Kakamega County Commissioner Meru Mwangi has directed all government institutions undertaking projects and buildings to ensure they seek approvals from the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) prior to commencing constructions.
Speaking while chairing the National Government Development -County Implementation Coordination and Management Committee (NGD-CICMC), Mwangi maintained that all constructions must conform to the law and owners ensure environmental impact assessment is undertaken prior to commencement of construction.
NEMA is charged with the responsibility of enforcing environmental management and ensuring that all developments including buildings are not harmful to the environment and that developers mitigate harmful effects to the environment due to construction of their buildings.
The county commissioner directed the Housing department undertaking construction of affordable housing in Kakamega’s Milimani estate to acquire the necessary license from the environmental body as soon as possible to avert any tussle in the future.
“All constructions, whether government or private, must adhere to law,” he said.
Mwangi said the committee will embark on a tour of some of the projects being undertaken in the area to assess progress.
The main role of the committee is to oversee national government projects and programmes to ensure their effective implementation for better service delivery.
