Government reveals number of Kenyans that have died, displaced by floods

The government has issued a latest update on the data about the number of people the country has lost due to floods.

A statement by the government spokesperson Dr Isaac Mwaura on Tuesday revealed that so far, 289 Kenyans have died.

Mwaura further said another 57,120 households have been displaced affecting about 285,600 people.

Currently, there are 187 camps set up by the government to support the dispatched Kenyans.

The camps, Mwaura said, are spread across 25 counties.

“The government is facilitating logistical support, temporary shelter and esse5sulllkes to the individuals and households that have been affected by the floods,” said the government spokesperson in a statement.

Aside from loss of lives and displacement of people, the floods have also damaged at least 62 health facilities in 11 counties.

“The damage on agriculture spans 168,092 acres of land with approximately 8,722 livestock reported dead,” Mwaura said.

The floods have also had a negative effect on the transport sector.

Several roads have been reported closed but later reopened.

The situation has also affected train services with operations from Nairobi – Limuru – Longonot, Nairobi – Lukenya, Nairobi – Embakasi, Nairobi – Nakuru – Kisumu and Nairobi – Nanyuki still suspended.

The floods situation had also delayed oenijf6if the schools for the second term.Initially, the schools were to open on April 29, 2024.

The opening date was pushed ahead twice. But the schools were finally opened on Monday, May 12, 2024, although there were still safety concerns for learners in some of the institutions.
