The government through the ministry of education has released Sh30.5, which is expected to go a long way in boosting education activities across the country.
The disbursement is for secondary school education capitation, loans and scholarships for students in universities.
In a statement on Wednesday, Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu, announced that the funds are expected to be received in schools before learners break for the April holidays.
Schools close for April holidays starting early next week, for a period of three weeks before the second term of 2024 starts in earnest.
According to CS Machogu, Sh7 billion will be channeled towards Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) learners in public schools.
Sh16 billion will be directed to the Free Day Secondary School education program as grants, while the rest will be disbursed to universities as loans under the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) and scholarships.
The allocation, the CS noted brings to Sh32 billion and Sh12 billion the total amount released by the government for loans and scholarships respectively, this financial year.
Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Collins Oyuu had threatened to call for a teacher’s strike, in the event that government fails to release capitation funds when schools reopen for the second term.
