The Kenya National Highways Authority (KenHA) has issued an update on the progress of the much anticipated Nairobi Expressway. In a statement released on Monday, September 20, 2021, the state agency revealed that construction f the multi-billion road is 62.6 per cent complete.
KenHA noted that the construction of the operation and monitoring centre is 93 per cent done.
The agency further listed multiple interventions that will be undertaken in the coming months to ease traffic snarl ups along Mombasa Road. These include, opening up sections of the Nairobi Expressway.
According to KenHA, the section of the expressway from Imara Daima to Airtel will be opened up t pave way for works on the existing highway (A104).
The lanes that were closed at Syokimau and Mlolongo areas will also be reopened. The first sections to be opened will be the JKIA – Mlolongo stretch and Westlands -James Gichuru stretch which are scheduled for September 30, 2021.
The Haile Selassie – UoN Roundabout will be the last to be opened on October 15.
“Traffic management remain a critical component of project implementation to ensure relative ease of movement… to this end various interventions have been put in place including; widening angles at diversion points, continuous watering of construction sites to reduce rising dust and opening up lanes that were previously closed in Mlolongo and Syokimau…,” the statement read in part.
KeNHA urged motorists to expect some traffic around General Motors area where a foot bridge is being installed and along Bunyala Road where hoisting of box girders s ongoing.
The agency further urged members of the public to exercise calm and bear with it as it works towards timely delivery of the project.
