Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga has officially announced his bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship.

Speaking at a joint press conference alongside Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Raila emphasized that his aspiration is to serve the entire African continent, not just Kenya.

“This is out of an understanding that we are in this as Kenya and not partisan political parties. I appreciate the offer of support,” he said.

During a recent joint media briefing with Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga expressed his bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship.

Raila emphasized that he is vying for a position in Africa, not within the government of the Republic of Kenya.

He also appreciated the support he is receiving from the Kenya Kwanza administration and exchanged notes with Mudavadi on the status of the bid.

“I wish to reiterate the obvious, that I am vying for a position in Africa not in the government of the Republic of Kenya,” he stated.

Raila’s qualifications make him a strong contender for this crucial role. His previous experience as the AU High Representative for Infrastructure positions him well for the responsibilities of the chairmanship.

Mudavadi echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that their support for Raila transcends local politics and aligns with national interests.

“We exchanged notes on preparations from my side and the government side and the next steps required to be taken,” he said.

He added that Raila possesses the necessary and appropriate qualifications to lead the AU, emphasizing that this is not about local politics.

“We said yes because Raila is qualified and a Kenyan. This is not about local politics, it is about national interests,” he said.

The AUC chairmanship carries immense significance, and Raila’s commitment to leveraging his expertise and relationships underscores his dedication to Africa’s progress.

As the submission deadline approaches, all eyes are on Raila’s campaign.

Raila assured Kenyans that if elected, he will continue to fulfill his roles in Kenya’s political landscape.

The proximity of Addis Ababa, where the AUC is headquartered, allows him to effectively balance both responsibilities.
