Farmers have been urged to be more innovative and embrace good agricultural management practices for increased productivity.
Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), Director Food Crop Research Institute Japheth Wanyama challenged farmers to prioritize sustainable agricultural and economic transformation through promotion of climate smart technologies.
He explained that climate smart technology is a trusted avenue to address main challenges faced in growing of cereal, root and tuber crops.
“As an organization, we are well equipped to address challenges of climate change that come along with biotic and abiotic factors which lead to a decline in food production,” he said.
He revealed the organization has generated about 3000 types of technologies which cover cereals, root tubers, legumes and cross cutting factors in soil fertility and crop diseases which need to be disseminated to farmers.
Deputy Director Food Crop Research Institute Dr. Keziah Marigoi said information on the emerging technology can be easily accessed from KALRO Centres across country, where certified crop varieties can also be purchased.
Noting that there’s need for farmers to shift to agribusiness which will help fetch more profits, Keziah pointed out this will help ensure sustainable food security.
