The Kenya Power Company has launched a campaign aimed at updating the current token meters.
The ‘update token meter yako’ campaign seeks to have all Kenyans with the devices to have them updated by August 31, 2024. Token meters that will not have been updated by then will stop accepting tokens.
Speaking during the launch on Wednesday, Kenya Power Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director Joseph Siror, said the exercise is targeting to update 7.4 million prepaid meters, adding that the exercise is free of charge.
Engineer Siror explained the updating process.
“Customers will receive two codes from Kenya Power when they purchase tokens. They will be required to key the codes to their meter following the steps indicated in the SMS before loading the new token.
“In other instances, the Company will send the codes directly to the customers who haven’t purchased tokens to notify them to update their meters. The process is simple and free,” he said.
“A total of 7.4 million prepaid meters are targeted for this exercise. All prepaid meters that are not updated by the deadline will stop accepting tokens. We have put in place elaborate measures to ensure all our customers are fully assisted in updating their meters to continue enjoying our services,” he added.
He said the initiative is a step towards securing energy access. “We urge all our prepaid customers to actively participate in this crucial endeavor that is meant to ensure that they continue enjoying electricity supply.”
On her part, Engineer Rosemary Oduor, the General Manager, Commercial Services and Sales said the exercise is hell-bent on empowering the power firm’s clients.
“It’s going to be a progressive exercise, and our goal is to empower and educate our customers. The exercise is absolutely free, and no customer will be required to pay anything to update their prepaid meters,” she noted.
The campaign is an endeavor towards providing uninterrupted electricity supply and secure energy access.
