The upgrade of the Kenya Power token purchase system service is now complete.
Over the weekend, the service was not available for at least 24 hours to facilitate the upgrade.
During that period, Kenyans were not able to purchase electricity tokens from all the available vendors.
But on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, Kenya Power said the token upgrade service was successful and that Kenyans can now start purchasing the tokens as usual.
“We are pleased to inform our customers that the scheduled upgrade of our prepaid token vending system was successfully completed yesterday at 10 pm,” the company said in part of the statement.
“Our prepaid customers can now buy their electricity tokens via all payment channels including M-PESA Paybill number 888880, Airtel Money and banking channels,” it added.
Kenya Power also appreciated their customers for their patience and understanding during the process.
“We assure them that we are committed to continuously improving our services to better meet their needs,” Kenya Power said.
Kenya Power owns and operates most of the electricity transmission and distribution systems in the country.
As at the end of June 2020, the company was selling electricity to over 8 million customers.
Data shows that Kenya Power has about 2.1 million customers on postpaid billing while 6.8 million are on prepaid billing.
It is currently working on phasing out prepaid customers, most of who are in rural areas.
The company’s key mandate is to plan for sufficient electricity generation and transmission capacity to meet demand; build and maintain the power distribution and transmission network and retail electricity to its customers.
The Government has a controlling stake at 50.1% of the shareholding with private investors at 49.9%.
Kenya Power is listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange.
