Magistrate shot by Police officer during court proceedings

A Magistrate has been shot by a police officer during a court proceeding at the Makadara law courts on Thursday, 13 June, 2024.

Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti who was set to deliver a ruling in a case surrounding the suspect’s wife was shot on the thigh during the session in court No. 9, he was rushed to hospital for medical attention alongside another victim who was injured in the fiasco.

Police said the senior officer is an Officer Commanding Station in Kisumu who had travelled to Nairobi to attend to the wife’s case.

The wife was to be sentenced to life imprisonment by the magistrate.

Soon after the magistrate had ruled on the matter, the officer went behind the tent and shot her, Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei said.

The suspect was fataly shot by Police officers who were manning the hearing, Bungei said in a statement.

“Other officers who were present responded and shot the officer fatally wounding him,” he said.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have since arrived to the scene to persue the motive of the shooting as further investigations unfold
