Nyeri nominated MCA Agnes Wachira has called on the national government to ensure each girl student has access to enough sanitary towels to keep them in school.

Speaking Tuesday at Nyamachaki Primary School in Nyeri Town during the Menstrual Hygiene Day, the nominated MCA said most of the girls from the slum”areas in the county are facing challenges in accessing the sanitary towels.

“Girls who come from vulnerable families are missing classes due to lack of sanitary towels. The government should ensure every school going girl in primary and secondary has access to the towels,” said the MCA.

During the event more than 320 girls at Nyamachaki Primary School received sanitary towels from the MCA.

Ms Wachira said she has started donating sanitary towels to girls from vulnerable homes and her program has benefited more than 2,000 girls.

Another nominated Nyeri MCA Janet Kamiru who accompanied Wachira during the event urged Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu to revive the sanitary towels donation program to girls in schools.

“Supporting girls is supporting life, the government should set aside enough resources to cater for the program. Menstruation should not be the reason girls have limited access to education, hampering their performance,” said Kamiru.

During the event the students could not hide their joy saying they can now concentrate in their classes.

‘’I can now sit in class and concentrate on my lessons comfortably’ ’said Nyawira a pupil at Nyamachaki Primary school
