A Murang’a court on Monday sentenced a middle aged man to serve one year imprisonment after he admitted charges of assaulting his girlfriend.

Michael Kamau who appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Edwin Nyaga was charged that on April 20 at Mukangu village in Murang’a County he assaulted and injured Mary Muthoni.

According to the facts tabled before the court by the prosecution, Kamau caused chaos when he found his girlfriend, Muthoni having a conversation with another man at their home.

The presence of the other man at Muthoni’s home irked Kamau prompting him to pick a machete and hit his girlfriend on head.

Particulars of the case further indicated that the other man overpowered and contained Kamau from causing more harm.

During the incident, Kamau was also accused of destroying household items and burnt some of Muthoni’s belongings.

The complainant was rushed to Murang’a Level 5 hospital where she was treated and afterwards she reported the matter at Murang’a police station, where she filled a P3 form.

Without mitigation, Kamau was given an alternative of paying a Sh20, 000 fine in lieu of imprisonment.
