Chief Justice Martha Koome has confirmed the establishment of a permanent Court of Appeal in Eldoret, which will be finalized following the upcoming interviews for Judges of Appeal.
Speaking on Thursday during a courtesy call on Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Chelilim, she also announced the posting of an additional judge to the High Court in Eldoret.
“The Judiciary has also gazetted courts in Moiben, Turbo, Chepkorio, and Soi to deepen access to justice,” CJ Koome stated.
Her visit preceded the launch of the court in Moiben and an Alternative Justice Systems (AJS) suite.
Additionally, five AJS suites have been established in five other sub-counties in Uasin Gishu.
CJ Koome praised the county for collaborating with the Judiciary to enhance access to justice by providing space for court construction and establishing AJS suites.
She highlighted the involvement of county leadership with Court User Committees (CUC), noting that Deputy Governor John Barorot serves as the vice-chair in the CUC sub-committee on AJS.
She assured Governor Chelilim that additional magistrates are available for deployment in areas where the county is ready to establish more courts.
Koome also appealed to the governor to assist the Judiciary in securing housing for judges and judicial officers in the county.
Governor Chelilim urged the Judiciary to post additional judges to address numerous succession and land matters that require prompt resolution. He welcomed the introduction of AJS in the county, emphasizing that many people prefer resolving disputes outside the court.
Chelilim noted that AJS provides an amicable resolution of cases and asked for more community training to embrace this non-adversarial, win-win solution, particularly for succession and family disputes.
