Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has disclosed that plans to move the Kisii Main GK Prison from town to pave way for the expansion of Kisii town are almost complete.

Speaking at the facility on Monday, Prof Kindiki said the national and county government are working together to secure an alternative land for the prison facility.

“I am glad to note that the process of identifying the different alternative locations for the prison is almost complete and we are waiting for a few verifications,” he noted.

The CS pointed out that two sites had been identified and so far, one location that was approximately 20 kilometres from Kisii town had been agreed upon.

Prof Kindiki said the safety of the inmates and officers was key during the selection of the site and the location will not be far away from the courts.

“The decision to relocate the prison from its current location is irreversible and we will be making a final determination concerning the new site and begin its construction as soon as possible,” he affirmed.

The CS said the relocation of the prison will pave way for the affordable houses which will host public officials and other members of the public that require economical accommodation. Currently, the facility has an ongoing Affordable Housing project that is 70 percent complete.

Last year, Kisii Governor Simba Arati requested President William Ruto to relocate the prison as part of decongesting the town and initiating development projects for the county and national governments.
