Police in Murang’a are working to prosecute a section of Murang’a MCAs who caused chaos leading to destruction of property in the local County Assembly on Tuesday.
Murang’a County Police Commander David Mathiu said investigations were complete and those behind the chaos would be charged before court.
He condemned the incident where irate MCAs who were demanding removal of their colleagues from the Assembly’s Public Service Board stormed the office of the Clerk and that of the Speaker and destroyed property worth millions of shillings.
The Commander said the MCAs were not above the law and the culprits would be charged saying one of the police officers who was among those responding to the chaos was assaulted and injured.
“Several statements have been recorded and we are working to establish the real amount of the property destroyed. One of our officers who was injured in the chaos has also obtained a P3 and we are ready to prosecute those behind the skirmishes and destruction of property.
“As police, we have the responsibility to protect lives, property and prevent chaos. So we are committed to ensure law and order prevails in the county as I warn those who are planning to disrupt meetings or destroy people that they will not escape from the law,” noted Mathiu at his office on Wednesday.
The Commander also expressed concerns over the chaos that rocked an event attended by three Cabinet Secretaries on Monday at Kigumo. He said the disruptions witnessed during the occasion aimed at assisting women weavers was shameful, warning supporters of political leaders to abstain from engaging each other during events.
During the Kigumo basket weaver’s expo and fundraiser that was organized by nominated Senator Veronica Maina, disruptions were witnessed after supporters of Murang’a County Woman Representative and those of Maragua MP Mary Waithera, engaged each other.
“The occasion was not a political rally. It was attended by three Cabinet Secretaries and a section of diplomats. I warn those planning to be using public events to hackle leaders that this will not be tolerated. We need to maintain peace and respect all leaders,” he added.
Mathiu also asked political leaders to stop influencing their supporters to disrupt the functions of other leaders.
“Political leaders need to stick to their lanes and support development initiatives in the county and avoid getting involved in matters that may cause violence,” asserted the Commander.
Meanwhile, he said they were working to totally curtail stealing of pineapples from farms owned by Delmonte Company limited.
He said the stealing has gone down saying there were those who were still maneuvering ways to access the farms.
“Recently, some young men stoned one of the police cars on patrol at the Delmonte farm. We will not rest till we stop the stealing and invasion of private farms,” he further said.
