Poor workmanship has been blamed for the collapse of toilets in schools, Embu County as a result of heavy rainfall.
County Director of Education Kipruto Kosgei said from their assessment, the majority of collapsed toilets clearly point towards weak structural integrity.
“We have established that the collapse was not purely because of the rains, but poor workmanship especially on those old toilets,” he said.
Speaking in his office, the Director called on school managements to be more keen in construction works to avert such occurrences.
“We are going to sit down with head teachers and our officers so that we emphasize on the need to supervise construction especially on critical installations like toilets to ensure they are able to withstand such pressures,” he added.
Additionally, Kosgey advised the schools where toilets have collapsed to fence off the areas to avert tragedies.
He also asked the schools to liaise with their respective NG-CDF offices as well as the County Government to facilitate reconstruction of the collapsed toilets.
However, the Director said the collapse did not happen in a magnitude that could lead to the affected schools not opening for the second term.
