The family of the former President, the late Daniel Arap Moi is in mourning.
They are mourning Moi’s daughter, June Chebet Moi.
In a statement, Moi’s family announced that June died on Thursday morning, aged 60.
“At this time of grief, we request for your prayers and privacy as we the family come to terms with the tragic loss of our sister. May her soul rest in eternal peace,” the family said.
Moi ruled Kenya for 24 years, retiring in 2002.
The former Head of State died in February, 2020, aged 95.
June Chebet was the last-born daughter, among the former President’s five sons and three daughters.
However, she was not the former president’s biological child, having been adopted by the Moi family.
She is an alumni of Kenya High High School. After her university education in Canada, she settled into business.
Some of his prominent brothers include Gideon Moi, Kenya National African Union (KANU) chairman, former Rongai Member of Parliament Raymond Moi, Jonathan Toroitich (a former rally driver, who died in 2019) and Philip Moi (a retired army officer) among others.
Gideon and Raymond lost their political seats in 2022. Chebet and Gideon were reportedly Moi’s favourite children.
Gideon is the Moi family’s spokesperson. June Chebet’s burial plans are ongoing.
President William Ruto in his condolence message said his prayer is that God gives the Moi family strength, at this time of mourning their departed kin.
“My heartfelt condolences to the family of the late President Daniel Arap Moi over the loss of June Chebet Moi. May God give you strength at this difficult time. Rest In Peace June.”
