The Registrar of Political Parties Anne Nderitu is calling on leaders of political parties to adhere to the code of conduct for political parties in order to promote inter party relations, cohesion and co-existence among members of the different parties.

Nderitu noted that the code prohibits political violence within political parties and members and asked the leaders to be on the forefront in advocating for peace.

The Registrar was speaking in Bungoma Wednesday during the official launch of aRegional Office for the Registrar of Political Parties that will cover Bungoma, Busia, and Kakamega.

She said that the code allows members of a political party to contribute to opinion shaping where members are allowed to air their views on issues and also allows members to know what the officials are doing.

The Registrar called for respect of human rights and fundamental freedoms for every individual and those from special groups like women and people with disabilities.

She emphasized the need of upholding and respect of the rule of law in promotion of national unity through dialogue saying that any time there was an issue, it was important that the concerned parties have a dialogue to solve it.

The Registrar called for political tolerance within parties that she said would allow members of the community to express their opinions freely but also responsibly to avoid cases of malicious damage and character assassination.

“People must be responsible of what they are saying,” she said.

Nderitu said that the opening of the offices would go a long way in ensuring that members of the political parties were aware of what goes on in the parties and assured members of education on political issues and processes.

The Registrar asked members of the public to note that they were free to join any political party of their wish. She said currently there were about 24m registered members of the political parties.

The Deputy Governor Bungoma County Jenifer Mbatiany attended the function.
