Kiambu County Commissioner Daniel Darusi has urged residents of Ruiru to plant trees in their surrounding environment as it elevates nature.

The CC who commissioned a tree planting exercise at the St. Georges Primary School in Ruiru said “we should all come together, unite and participate in an activity such as this one and plant more trees in our environment and in our town”.

This, he said, not only brings people together as a community, but also helps in conserving the environment as well as curbing climate change.

“Today was declared a public holiday to mark the National Tree Growing Day and a day that will help address climate change as tree growing is the singular long-term solution to the climate crisis and its devastating effects on life and livelihoods, “said the CC, adding that the county plans to plant 3,100 trees in the month of May.

Darusi encouraged the residents to continue planting trees at their homes and in various institutions and even at their places of worship.

Eliud Kamithu, who participated in the exercise said that he would carry extra tree seedlings and distribute them to a neighbouring community to plant in the open spaces and once they grow, they would act as wind breakers.

The tree seedlings planted comprised of exotic and indigenous seedlings which once grown will attract rainfall, break wind, provide vegetation cover, prevent soil erosion, beautify the environment and provide oxygen supply.
