Uthiru residents are slowly coming to terms with the Tuesday night’s tragedy that saw a five-storey building collapse.

The incident came after an evening of prolonged rains in the area saw a section of the five-storey house come tumbling down with curious onlookers from around the area rushing to the scene only to find the building in ruins.

Eric Yaya, a smokie vendor in the area told KNA that although it was sad to see the building collapse, he was not surprised given other infrastructure such as poor roads and mushrooming of buildings without proper planning.

“The road leading to the area is ruined, (the Kabete_Naivasha road) he said and most residents expressed their opinions saying the region has seen a housing boom in recent years and seems most buildings have not met the set standards on construction.

The Nairobi City County Chief Officer, Disaster Management Bramwel Simiyu however confirmed that four missing people that include a nanny and two children from one household as well as a 10 year old girl from another residence are missing with rescuing efforts which require specialized machines is continuing Kabete Sub County Police Commander Jacob Mwai confirmed deployment of several KDF officers to the scene of the incident.

“They are here to calm the situation, ” he said after some of the locals attempted looting under the guise of offering assistance.
