A spike in cases of theft of motorcycles in Homa Bay Town sub county has sparked outrage amongst Bodaboda operators.
The riders expressed concerns that five motorbikes have been stolen in the area in the last two weeks.
The Chairman of Bodaboda Riders Association in the Sub-county Opiyo Soso said that his members had lost the motorbikes through robbery with violence.
He said some of the victims were attacked by robbers who masqueraded as pillion passengers at night before they robbed them of their motorbikes.
“One of our members was robbed of his motorbike at Kabunde area on Tuesday night by people who masqueraded as customers. They threatened to kill him if he failed to hand over the motorbike. He had no option but to give them the motorbike,” said Soso.
He said in some cases, the motorbikes were stolen from the riders’ residences. He urged security agencies in the area to boost security to enhance their safety.
“We appeal to our security agencies to boost security to prevent theft of our motorbikes,” he added.
David Juma, the riders’ official in charge of security said people who rob them of motorbikes must be brought to book.
“We want police to take stern action against these people. We don’t want to take the law into our hands,” Juma said.He described the gangsters as people hell bent on killing their source of livelihood.
“Motorbikes are our sole source of livelihood. Anybody who steals them is rendering us jobless but we not allow them,” Juma said.
